The E-commerce Gold Rush

India's e-commerce market is not just FlipKart and Amazon. D2C (Direct to Consumer) brands are exploding. If you make candles, clothes, jewelry, or spices, you can sell directly to customers across India.

Step 1: Legal & Banking (Don't Skip)

  • GST Registration: Mandatory for selling goods online across states. (Regular Scheme recommended).
  • Current Bank Account: Linked to your business name.
  • MSME Registration: Optional, but good for loan benefits.

Step 2: The Tech Stack (Storefront)

You have two main choices in 2026:

  1. Shopify: Easy, fast, expensive monthly.
  2. WooCommerce: Flexible, owns your data, one-time heavy.

What you need on the site:

  • Product Pages with High-Res Zoom.
  • "Buy Now" (Direct Checkout) button.
  • Guest Checkout (Don't force login).

Step 3: Payments (Getting Paid)

  • Razorpay / PhonePe / Cashfree: These are the leaders.
  • UPI is King: 80% of orders will be UPI. Ensure your gateway supports seamless UPI intents.
  • COD (Cash on Delivery): Evil but necessary. 60% of Indian orders are COD. Use apps like "OTP Verification for COD" to reduce fake orders.

Step 4: Logistics (Shipping)

Do not go to the post office. Use aggregators like Shiprocket, NimbusPost, or Pickrr.

  • They pick up from your house/warehouse.
  • They deliver to 29,000 pincodes.
  • Cost: ₹30-50 per 500g.

Step 5: Marketing (Getting Traffic)

  • Meta Ads (Instagram): The primary driver for D2C.
  • Influencer Barter: Send free products to micro-influencers.
  • Google Shopping Ads: For high-intent product searches.

The "First 100 Orders" Plan

  1. Tell friends and family (WhatsApp broadcast).
  2. Run an "Early Bird" 50% off sale.
  3. Collect photo reviews from the first 10 buyers.
